  • Biological Activity
Description Gentamycin Sulfate is a complex of three different closely related aminoglycoside sulfates, Gentamicins c1, c1a and c2, obtained from Micromonospora purpurea and related species. They are broad-spectrum antibiotics, but may cause ear and kidney damage. Gentamycin Sulfate is reported to have activity against gram-negative bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and some mycoplasmas. Reported to have low toxicity to mammalian cells and viruses at certain concentrations, useful for long-term tissue culture studies with viruses. Gentamicin acts by binding to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome leading to inhibition of protein synthesis and death in susceptible bacteria.
