  • Biological Activity
Description Diclofenac is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent (NSAID) with antipyretic and analgesic actions. Diclofenac sodium (Dc), an anti-inflammatory agent, has remarkable inhibitory action both against drug-sensitive and drug-resistant clinical isolates of various Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Dc injected at 1.5 microg/g and 3.0 microg/g mouse body weight significantly protected animals from the lethality of Salmonella infection. In vivo test using 30 or 50 microg Dc per 20 g mouse (Swiss Albino variety) significantly (P <0.001) protected the animals when challenged with 50 MLD of a virulent Salmonella typhimurium. The anti-bacterial action of Dc was found to be due to inhibition of DNA synthesis which was demonstrated using 2 micro Ci (3H) deoxythymidine uptake .
